Heritage & Culture

The Flinders Ranges & Outback offer a wide range of experiences thanks to its pioneering history, wide-open spaces and rich Aboriginal heritage. Take a tour at Iga Warta, held on Adnyamathanha land. Be guided through painting sites dating back 35,000 years, visit the Red Gorge with ancient engravings over 80,000 years old or camp overnight and learn about the stars. Iga Warta is 100% owned, managed and staffed by Indigenous people.

The Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery also provides an opportunity for people visiting the Southern Flinders region to value and understand the importance of art and culture with an emphasis on showcasing inspiring indigenous artwork. The gallery hosts national touring exhibitions from major cultural institutions as well as developing exhibitions on topical subjects that are of interest to the community.

Four-wheel Driving

Most people who visit the Flinders Ranges choose a self-drive style holiday. Whilst it isn’t necessary to own a 4WD, as many of the roads are sealed, a key attraction of the region is the possibilities to explore off road. There are plenty of properties and stations that have kindly opened their gates to self-drivers. Choose from the Bendleby Ranges with numerous tracks, Mt Nor’West 4WD loop and Caernarvon track.

Rawnsley Park Station at Wilpena Pound also offer an assortment of experiences including self-drive tours, guided tours, walking trails, mountain biking and scenic flights.

Lake Eyre

Plan your trip to the Lake Eyre National Park and discover the lake that is hardly ever filled with water! Situated in the National Park, Lake Eyre is actually two lakes joined together by a channel stretching 77km wides and 144km in length. The natural icon has only been filled to capacity three times in 160 years and it is estimated that the water only covers the lake once every eight years.

During the monsoon season hundreds of tourists visit the region aiming to witness the natural event. Hundreds of waterbirds flock to the lake and the surrounding landscape starts to come alive with wildflowers. The traditional owners of the Lake Eyre region, the Arabana people, have lived in the Lake Eyre Basin for thousands of years.

Nyrstar Lead Smelter

Port Pirie is home to the world’s largest lead smelting works, operated by Nyrstar. The Nyrstar Lead Smelter has been producing and exporting lead, zinc, silver and gold from site on the Upper Spencer Gulf for over 120 years. Part of the Nyrstar Pty Ltd group, the smelter is one of the largest integrated zinc and lead producers in the world. Bookings for lead smelter guided tours can be made at the Port Pirie Cultural Precinct.
