South Australia’s Riverland is more known for being a summer destination. But there’s still plenty to do during the cooler months and, without the searing summer heat, it’s often more enjoyable!
We’ve put together a list of 5 things to do with kids when holidaying in the Riverland in winter, this is just the tip of the iceberg, there really is so much more to offer….
- Monash Adventure Playground
Monash Adventure Playground is fun for all ages. Get lost in the giant maze or have a go on the crazy leaning towers, flying foxes, gigantic swings, rope bridge or tree house (just to name a few!) The playground provides a range of fun activities and equipment to keep your family entertained. The large spacious grounds are also perfect for a picnic or BBQ’s are available.

Step back in time and show the kids how people used to live before there was TV, computers, iPads or air conditioning! Learn the stories of the early settlers, explore the village of over 45 old-time buildings and exhibits, and interact with the townspeople along the way at The Village Historic Loxton.

If you still want to experience the beauty of Murray River but it’s too cold to go swimming, then hire a kayak or canoe from Canoe Adventures Riverland or Canoe the Riverland. You can go on your own adventure or partake in one of their informative and relaxed guided tours. There’s no need to get wet (unless it’s raining!) No previous experience is necessary and fun for the whole family.

Get exploring in nature and visit one of the many National Parks in the Riverland. There are three separate areas comprising of over 13,000 hectares, including wetlands and floodplains; Katarapko, Lyrup Flats and Bulyong Island.These areas are full of native bird and wildlife and can provide a great opportunity for family bonding and nature play activities. If you’re in Renmark then make sure you that you also head to the riverfront, opposite the Renmark Hotel, in the evening to experience “Possum Parade”. - Geocaching
Geocaching is a great way to explore the Riverland and honestly what could be more fun for the family than going on a giant treasure hunt together?There are plenty of treasures to find that have been hidden throughout the Riverland and each will take you on new adventures to new locations.
