24 hours in Victor Harbor

Victor Harbor is so much more than its sun, sea and surf glory. Whether you’re staying for a night or longer, here’s a few things not to miss during your visit to Victor Harbor.

Horse Drawn Tram to Granite Island
Take a ride on the only horse-drawn tramway in Australia over to Victor Harbor’s iconic Granite Island. Magnificent Clydesdale horses draw you along the 630-metre causeway from seaside Victor Harbor to Granite Island, home to the magical little fairy penguins and often visited by sea lions and southern right whales.

Follow the path around the huge granite boulders tinged with orange lichen, with the sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a southern right whale between May and October.

Cockle train
The Cockle Train travels along the oldest steel railed railway in Australia dating back to 1887 when it was constructed to provide a link between the River Murray and the ocean wharfs at Port Elliot and later at Victor Harbor.

Why is this iconic journey called the ‘Cockle Train’? Because in the early days of settlement the local residents would take the horse drawn train to Goolwa to collect cockles from the sandy beaches. Today, the Cockle Train experience takes riders on a 30-minute journey from town to town offering some of the most picturesque coastal scenery on the Fleurieu Peninsula with uninterrupted views of the Southern Ocean.
